DeShaun Watson, QB, Clemson: The Heisman Trophy finalist is a dual-threat QB. He threw for 3,699 yards and 31 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,032 yards and 12 scores. Alabama will have to contain Watson in order to win.

Derrick Henry, RB, Alabama: The Heisman Trophy winner led the nation in rushing with 2,061 yards and 20 touchdowns. Clemson will need to keep him from breaking off big runs and make Alabama beat them through the air.

Shaq Lawson, DE, Clemson: Lawson says he will be playing at about 60 percent, but his 60 percent is better than most players’ 100. Lawson is a disruptive force and the Tide will have to get him blocked. He led the Tigers with 10.5 sacks and 23.5 tackles for loss.

Reggie Ragland, LB, Alabama: The senior led the Crimson Tide with 97 tackles this season and was named a first-team All-American by the Associated Press. He will be key to stopping Clemson’s rushing attack.

2016 National Championship Game Score Projection

2016 National Championship Game: The score projection formula I use to come up with bowl outcomes had a mixed year. It did its best ever straight up, going 29-11 in just picking the eventual winners of the games.##National Championship 2016## It also had its worst ever year in six total against the spread at just 17-23 versus the sharps in Vegas.

National Championship 2016

There is still one more bowl game to go: the national championship between Clemson and Alabama. The formula went 15-3 straight up in games between Power 5 conference teams, and one of the misses was picking Texas A&M over Louisville. There were some extenuating circumstances with the QB exodus from College Station, so the formula worked out splendidly over those kinds of games.

Of course, one of the other misses was projecting Oklahoma to beat Clemson 37-30. The reality was a 27-point swing the other way with the Tigers winning that one 37-17. It didn’t come close with that game.

Then again, it didn’t come all that close with the other semifinal either. It projected Alabama to win 26-19, a solid touchdown victory albeit with a Spartan cover of the 9.5-point spread. Instead, the Crimson Tide rolled all over MSU to the tune of 38-0. Turns out, it’s not a good idea to fight Alabama by doing roughly the same thing Alabama does but with less talent.

So with the possibility that this is underestimating both teams, the formula sees a classic of a title game. It has Alabama winning 27-26, meaning Clemson covers the (presently) seven-point spread. I can project yardage the same as I do points, and it comes out as having the Tigers outgaining the Tide 391-348 despite the loss. That would be an impressive showing by Clemson, as only Ole Miss’s 433 and Mississippi State’s 393 beat that among past Alabama opponents on the season. The Rebels’ 43 also is the only score greater than the 26 projected for Clemson.

Of course given how the formula has done straight up and against the spread this year, maybe the smart pick is to shout “Roll Tide” and take Alabama -7.

CFP National Championship 2016: Box Score Predictions for Alabama vs. Clemson

CFP National Championship 2016: Can the top-ranked team in the nation really be disrespected? That’s the card that Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney played after his Tigers dismantled the favored Oklahoma Sooners in the College Football Playoff semifinals on New Year’s Eve.It’s fairly certain he will play that card again as Clemson prepares to play favored Alabama in the CFP National Championship Jan. 11 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide (13-1) are a seven-point favorite over Clemson (14-0), according to Odds Shark, even though the Tigers have passed every test they have been given this season.

CFP National Championship 2016

Oklahoma was looked at as the hot team going into the semifinal round, but Clemson showed its class by outscoring the Sooners 21-0 in the second half and rolling to a 37-17 victory.Quarterback Deshaun Watson’s athleticism and skill were on display at all the key moments in the game, as he completed 16 of 31 passes for 187 yards with a touchdown and an interception, and he also hurt Oklahoma badly with his running ability.CFP National Championship 2016

Watson carried the ball 24 times for 145 yards and a touchdown, and he showed off his skills on designed running plays and scrambles from the pocket.

Watson has completed 303 of 444 passes for 3,704 yards with 31 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions on the year. He has also rushed for 1,032 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Watson is the trigger to Clemson’s offense, which scored 35 points or more nine times this season. However, Watson is not the only weapon, as running back Wayne Gallman punished Oklahoma for 150 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. Wideouts Hunter Renfrow and Artavis Scott combined for 11 receptions and 122 yards against the Sooners.

Alabama is not going to be intimidated by Clemson or the big stage, though, because it’s clear that Saban knows how to prepare his team for critical situations. Alabama not only withstood a tough challenge from a powerful Michigan State team, but the Tide also dismantled the Spartans by a 38-0 margin. National Championship Game 2016

The Alabama defense is the strength of this team, and in addition to registering the shutout, the Crimson Tide defense limited Michigan State to 29 yards on 26 rushing attempts. That same defense is going to attempt to shut down Watson, and while Alabama may not be able to play as effectively as it did against the Spartans, it will make life difficult for Watson.

Defensive lineman Jonathan Allen (36 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss and 12.0 sacks in 2015) leads a brilliant Alabama front four, and that unit should harass Watson throughout the title game.

Alabama will also try to unleash Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry on Clemson’s defense. Michigan State focused its defense on stopping Henry, but he still gained 75 yards and scored two rushing touchdowns.

Alabama quarterback Jake Coker was razor sharp against the Spartans, completing 25 of 30 passes for 286 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Coker has completed 67.1 percent of his passes this season with a 19-8 touchdown-interception ratio.

These two teams will trade punches well into the third quarter, but look for Saban’s defense to take hold by the time the fourth quarter gets underway.

Prediction: Alabama 34, Clemson 20

While the players on the field will decide the championship, it’s tough to go against a Saban-led team. He has already won four national championships (three at Alabama), and he knows how to prepare his team for the biggest stage.

If he wins a fifth national title, he will be right on the heels of legendary Alabama and college football icon Bear Bryant, who won six during his coaching career.Swinney will use his team’s underdog status to motivate his team, but he’s going to have to do more to prepare his team to play against the powerful Crimson Tide.

Watson will make his presence felt, but at a certain point in the third quarter, the Alabama defense will figure it out and find a way to slow him down. At the same time, Henry will heat up and punish the Clemson defense.

Watson will run for 80 yards and pass for 175 more. Gallman will be held in check and won’t get more than 50 yards in this game.

Henry will run for 125 yards and two touchdowns, while Coker will continue with his accurate passing and throw for 260 yards and two more touchdowns.

College Football Championship 2016: Odds, Prop Bets for Alabama vs. Clemson

College Football Championship 2016: Lopsided results have characterized the 2015-16 bowl season and national semifinals, but college football fans can at least take comfort in knowing that the biggest game of all, the 2016 College Football National Championship, indeed features the two best teams in the nation in No. 1 Clemson and No. 2 Alabama.

College Football Championship 2016

There’s a good chance the game is as competitive as the two teams’ respective resumes would suggest.
Clemson is looking to complete a 15-0 undefeated season and capture the school’s first national championship since 1981. For Alabama, it’s a chance at a 16th national title and fifth under head coach Nick Saban. The stakes are high; the stage is set. All that’s left is to play the game.

No Touchdown Scorer 100-1
No surprise here. The player given the best odds to score the game’s first touchdown is the Heisman Trophy winner. Derrick Henry tops the list, which is hardly a surprise considering he scored 25 of his team’s 50 offensive touchdowns this year. He has a fine track record of getting the Crimson Tide off to a fine start. Henry has scored the first touchdown for either team in seven of 14 games this year. Alabama vs Clemson

Clemson running back Wayne Gallman and Alabama wide receiver Calvin Ridley aren’t too far behind. Gallman is perhaps under-appreciated outside of Clemson thanks to sharing a backfield with star quarterback Deshaun Watson. The sophomore back has 13 touchdowns on the season and has scored in six of Clemson’s last seven games.

Calvin Ridley is Alabama’s top receiving threat and scored twice against Michigan State in the semifinal. Then again, he only has seven touchdowns on the entire season and will face a difficult test in Clemson corner Mackensie Alexander. It would be quite the feat if he beats Alexander for the first score of the game.Watson is a better threat than most quarterbacks to take it upon himself to score. Equally dangerous as a passer and runner, Watson has scored a staggering eight rushing touchdowns in his last five games. If there is a run defense to shut him down, it would appear to be Alabama’s. ESPN.com notes the Crimson Tide defense doesn’t like to let quarterbacks run around too much:

Just as Watson’s running has hit a high gear lately, Alabama’s rush defense appears to be peaking.

The Crimson Tide held Michigan State to 29 rushing yards in the Cotton Bowl, a season low for the Spartans. It was the sixth straight opponent the Crimson Tide held to fewer than 100 rush yards, the longest active FBS streak — by four games.

Can a running quarterback hurt Alabama? The Tide have allowed one 20-yard rush by a quarterback this season. Then again, Watson is a rare athlete. Alabama (nor any other team) doesn’t often come across quarterbacks with his speed and instincts as a ball-carrier. He’s the type of player who can flummox even the stoutest of run defenses, especially with a talented back like Gallman drawing plenty of attention.

Highest Scoring Quarter
Quarter Odds
1st 11-2
2nd 8-5
3rd 5-1
4th 9-4
Draw 13-2
According to TeamRankings.com, Alabama’s highest-scoring quarter is the second, at 10.6 points per game in this frame. Same goes for the Tigers, who have averaged 11.6 points per second quarters this season. The odds in the table above reflect this reality.

While Clemson does a pretty good job of picking up points throughout the game, it appears Alabama is a slow starter. It averages just 4.6 points per first quarter, per TeamRankings.com. For a power-running team, this seems pretty intuitive. It may take a drive or two to break down the opposing defense and let the floodgates open. Chewing the clock also comes into play.If this game is close, the fourth quarter might be a good bet to see a bunch of points. Smaller, speedy players like Clemson’s Hunter Renfrow could have a better chance of turning a short gain into a long one. Watson is dangerous in a two-minute drill against a prevent defense.

Henry loves to wear teams down. If he doesn’t score early, he’s a good bet to finish drives late. Alabama center Ryan Kelly told Bleacher Report’s Christopher Walsh why it’s so hard for defenses to contain Henry:

He’s got the endurance. I mean, the guy can run for days. Defensive guys, when we start going fast in the third and fourth quarter, them getting off the ground, running back there and trying to get lined up, then you’ve got Derrick Henry running at you and you have to tackle him, do it all over again, that kind of wears down defenders.

I can’t [speak] for them, but a guy like his stature, his size, his speed, I wouldn’t want to do that every time. It would suck.
First Scoring Play
Play Type Odds
Alabama Touchdown 6-5
Clemson Touchdown 7-4
Alabama Field Goal 9-2
Clemson Field Goal 13-2
Alabama Safety 50-1
Clemson Safety 50-1
Od
Apparently, the oddsmakers feel this game has a better chance of starting off with a touchdown than a field goal. In 55 red-zone trips, Clemson scored 33 touchdowns and 16 field goals; it has little trouble finishing off drives. Alabama also put up far more touchdowns than field goals when it got close to paydirt, with 33 touchdowns and 15 field goals in 59 red-zone trips.

This is to say nothing of the several long touchdowns Henry ripped off this year, or the big plays in the passing game engineered by Watson and Alabama QB Jake Coker.
CFP Championship 2016

Clemson’s scoring ability is sound, but this is Alabama’s defense we’re talking about. Even if Watson’s mobility proves troublesome, Alabama can clamp down in the red zone, where the field is shorter and there’s less room to maneuver.

An early Clemson drive stalling out because the likes of Alabama linebackers Reggie Ragland and Reuben Foster can hunt down Watson and Gallman without worrying about leaving swaths of open grass behind them seems like a distinct possibility. On the flip side, Henry driving into the teeth of Clemson’s excellent defensive front might take some time to set up the passing game. Jake Coker faces a strong pass rush and a strong cornerback duo in Alexander and Cordrea Tankersley.

Barring a big downfield play early on, Alabama’s passing game might only take off once Henry and (perhaps) a dash of Kenyan Drake have established the run and forced Clemson to draw in its defense.

These two teams have little trouble finishing drives, but national-title jitters and strong defensive play might mean field goals come first in this contest.

CFP National Championship 2016: Date, Schedule for Alabama vs. Clemson

CFP National Championship 2016: We’re down to two as the No. 1 Clemson Tigers are set to take on the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide for a chance at a national championship.

One team was favored in the semifinals, and the other was not, but they are both heading to the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship Game after convincing semifinal wins.

National Championship 2016

National Championship 2016

Here’s a look at the schedule for the title game and some reaction around the web:Despite being undefeated and the undisputed No. 1 team in the country heading into the Orange Bowl, Clemson was still the underdog against the No. 4 Oklahoma Sooners.

National championship 2016

Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney did a great job of making sure his team knew not many people around the country gave them much of a chance after Clemson’s 37-17 victory, per ESPN:Alabama, on the other hand, was nearly a 10-point favorite over the No. 3 Michigan State Spartans, and played like it, taking home a 38-0 victory.

Alabama’s Heisman Trophy-winning running back, Derrick Henry, broke the SEC single-season rushing touchdown record when he crossed the goal line for the 24th time to give the Crimson Tide a 7-0 lead in the first quarter over Michigan State. He finished with 75 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries.

As The Monday Morning Quarterback pointed out, Henry is going to be hard to stop in the championship game:However, if Clemson’s defense continues to play like it has all season, the Crimson Tide are going to be forced into throwing the ball more than they may like, per ESPN Stats & Info:Quarterback Jake Coker did just that against Michigan State—and did it well—completing 25 of 30 passes for a career-high 286 yards and two touchdowns.

ESPN college football analyst Danny Kanell praised Coker at halftime of the Cotton Bowl despite some earlier criticism:However, it’s going to be all about Henry setting the pace for the Alabama offense against Clemson.

The Tigers offense, which has averaged nearly 40 points per game, was highly touted, but the defense held Oklahoma’s star running back Samaje Perine to just 58 yards on 15 carries after he came in averaging 162 yards per game the past three contests.

The top two teams in the country excel in all facets of the game, and here’s a look at how they match up on each side of the ball:

National Championship 2016

Even though the Crimson Tide rely heavily on Henry, the Tigers actually rush for more yards per game because their quarterback, Deshaun Watson, who was third in Heisman voting, has rushed for 1,032 yards after his 145-yard performance against the Sooners.

Swinney didn’t mince words when talking about his quarterback after his team’s latest win, per ESPN.com.

“Deshaun Watson is the best player in the country. It’s just that simple,” Swinney said. “People can have their own opinions or whatever, but there ain’t a better one than No. 4. This guy is special in every regard.”

Watson and the Tigers offense are going to be tested against the No. 1-ranked defense in the country, per ESPN.com’s team efficiency rankings, that just shut out a team averaging 32.1 points per game.

Between the Clemson offense and Alabama defense, something is going to give in the national championship game in what should be a great end to an exciting college football season.

Swinney, Watson and the Tigers have proved doubters wrong all season, but with the way Alabama is clicking on both sides of the ball, it’s hard to see the Crimson Tide losing to anyone at this point.

Prediction: Alabama wins, 31-20.
